Like Back Then「かつてのように」

　When I was making my art piece I was thinking about the ancient Hawaiians and how they did things as well as how life is now. So, the meaning of my artwork is that living in Hawai’i, is about preserving how the Native Hawaiians did things, and to pass on the tradition to make sure it doesn’t get lost in time. I wanted people to feel free when they looked at my painting and to think of some traditions that they have in their family. I wanted them to be inspired to keep meaningful traditions in their family alive and to make new ones on the way. For these reasons I used watercolor to give it a sort of free or loose look. I didn’t really use a specific technique, I just went with whatever felt right.

私がこの絵画を制作していたとき、古代のハワイアンはどう生活していたかそして今の私たちの生活はどうなのかを考えていました。
だから、私の作品の意味は、ハワイに住むということは、ネイテイブハワイアンがやっていたことを保存し、時の経過とともに埋もれてしまわないように伝統を伝えることだと思います。
私は、私の絵を見る人が彼らの家族が持っている伝統のいくつかを自由に感じて考えてほしかったのです。
絵を見る人たちに家族の中にある意義ある伝統を継承し、新しい伝統はさらに進めていくきっかけとなってほしいと思いました。
私は、絵がちょっと自由で緩やかな感じになるように水彩画にしました。あまり特別な技術を使わず、ただよいと思ったことは何でも試しました。
